Electronic line calls at the US Open

Apparently the USTA are considering the use of electronic aids at this years US Open. Wimbledon may follow suit in 2006. Hawkeye and Auto-ref are the systems being trialed.

The BBC have used Hawkeye at Queen's club and Wimbledon the past couple of years to boost their commentary analysis but I'm not sure it would be used as a real-time aid for the umpire.

Maybe the plan is to refer to the screens on particularly controversial calls before playing a let or awarding the point. I wonder how much this will slow the game down. With prize money going up so much, the stakes are so high these days that technology was bound to be introduced sooner or later.

What does everybody else think?

I would love to see the introduction of this technology to the officials. I believe the technology should only really be used on particularly questionable calls to prevent distruption to play.
