Masters Cup Houston Thread

Federer has torn a muscle in his thigh and may be forced to miss the Masters Cup in Houston in two weeks time. He injured himself during practise for the Basel event.

Hopefully he can get himself fit in time, it'd be a shame to have the world number one missing

Yeah I agree. I hope he is fit in time. Then again if Henman qualifies he could do with all the help he can get hehe

Henman makes Houston by default

Tim Henman has booked his place in the season-ending Masters Cup later this month without even hitting a ball. Henman needed to get to the quarter-finals of this week's Paris Masters to reach the tournament in Houston. But Andre Agassi and David Nalbandian, who lie just behind Henman in the Champions Race, have both withdrawn from the Paris event with injuries.

Federer reckons he'll be fit for Houston. Let's hope he is.

With a 69-6 win/loss record in 2004, my money is on Federer. Or it would be if the odds were better.

The Masters Cup groups have been drawn and are as follows. It should be a good tournament, hopefully Federer is back to full fitness.

Red Group:
Roger Federer
Lleyton Hewitt
Carlos Moya
Gaston Gaudio

Blue Group:
Andy Roddick
Marat Safin
Guillermo Coria
Tim Henman

Malisse is playing doubles here with Rochus, they lost their first match to Knowles/Nestor

Roger Federer took 91 minutes to beat Gaston Gaudio 6-1 7-6 (7/4). It was drizzling all day in Houston so that was the only match completed.

After beating Coria, Henman now needs to defeat Marat Safin to get into the last 4. It's widely known that Safin has a bit of a reputation for going to pieces. So here's my idea. Safin lost his rag at Wimbledon earlier this year. I reckon when they meet at the net for the toss...Henman should call him a big Russian pansy that cannot play on grass. Hopefully this will jerk his karma and allow Henman into the semi finals.

Marat Safin  def. Tim Henman's 6-2 7-6. So I guess he didn't use my tactic.

Lleyton Hewitt will play Andy Roddick in the last four and Roger Federer will take on Marat Safin in the other semi-final. Federer and Roddick are so far undefeated and could take the top prize of $1.52million.

Hehe, winning ugly! Shame he lost. The last 4 looks like this:

Federer (1) vs Safin (4)
Roddick (2) vs Hewitt (3)

Federer vs Hewitt in the final.

Roger Federer won an epic second-set tie-break 20-18, the longest in Masters history, to beat Marat Safin 6-3 7-6. Roger Federer won an epic second-set tie-break 20-18, the longest in Masters history, to beat Marat Safin 6-3 7-6.

Match starts at 03:30 local time (21:30 GMT)
