Federer will be back in action this weekend when he's part of the Swiss team that will face Great Britain in a World Group qualifier. The winners will be part of the elite World Group in 2006. The tie is to be played in Geneva on clay. Will Federer find it tricky to switch from hard courts back to clay and give GB half a chance? Nope, I don't think so either
The Swiss team weren't aware of the threat of Andy Murray when they chose to play on clay.
Reuters reports...
MURRAY FACTOR
Federer admitted the Swiss team had not factored in the emergence of British 18-year-old Andy Murray at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open when they chose the surface. Murray trains on clay in Spain.
"We didn't know about Murray that well when we picked the surface," Federer said. "But no matter what surface you play on against Murray, he's become a great player throughout the last few months.
"It's tougher than expected all of a sudden. But I still feel like we're the big favourites.
Looks like picking clay did not blow up in the swiss' faces, Andy Murray went down in 3 sets yesterday. Alan Makin also lost in straights as expected against world number 1 Roger Federer.
Looks like the tie is over for Great Britain as no one will beat Roger Federer in his second singles match on Sunday.
The UK are gonna to play in first group... But if Bulgaria beat Ukraine (the result is 2-1 for ukr), we aslo are gonna to play in first group next year.
And i think that Russia will win over Croatia. Good luck, Russia and Safin!
Goran Ivanisevic has committed himself to Croatia's Davis Cup cause and pulled out of November's Champions Masters at the Royal Albert Hall. The 2001 Wimbledon champion had been due in London for the Tour of Champions finale from 29 November to 4 December.
But the 34-year-old has changed his plans after a shock call-up for the Davis Cup final against Slovakia.
"This is a chance of a lifetime for me to be in the Croatian team for the Davis Cup final," he said.
"Who knows if it is ever going to happen again?"
Ivanisevic had already qualified for the Albert Hall event but it clashes with the Davis Cup final, which takes place over the weekend 2-4 December.
"I think the tournament and the spectators will understand that this is a one-time opportunity for me and I plan to play a lot of Masters' in the future," he said.
"Trust me, I will be there in London next year."
Ivanisevic was called out of retirement by Croatia team captain Niki Pilic, and may be brought in for the doubles rubber.
